Local auto dealers and YMCAs team up to give new coats to needy kids

The Auto Dealers Caring for Kids Foundation is distributing almost 53,000 new winter coats through its 12th annual Driving Away the Cold Program.

A truck arrived at the Northeast Family YMCA, 11088 Knights Road, last Thursday to drop off dozens of boxes of coats.

Later that night, the Y handed out the coats to needy children.

The overall effort involves 170 local auto dealers, including 17 in Philadelphia. Representatives from Dunphy and Chapman were among those at last week’s dropoff.

The dealer participants annually conduct a pledge program to help raise funds to purchase the coats.

The Auto Dealers Association of Greater Philadelphia also plays a part by donating $2 from every Philadelphia Auto Show ticket sold to its Auto Dealers Caring for Kids Foundation.

The coats are then distributed via 220 social service agencies, school districts, churches and shelters, along with 29 regional YMCA branches.
