Bargain hunt

A multi-house neighborhood yard sale will take place on Saturday, Oct. 10, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. on both sides of Academy Road in Academy Gardens in the 19114 ZIP code.

Mass of remembrance

A COVID-19 Mass of Remembrance will take place Sunday, Oct. 18, at 2 p.m. at Resurrection of Our Lord Parish, 2000 Shelmire Ave.

This special Mass is for anyone who was unable to have a proper memorial because of the pandemic.

People are encouraged to bring a framed picture of loved ones to place around the altar. Ashes are also welcome. Masks are required. ••

Playground name change bill advances

City Council’s Committee on Parks, Recreation and Cultural Affairs last week unanimously approved a bill renaming Chalfont Playground, 4382 Deerpath Lane, as the “Corporal Jimmy O’Connor Memorial Playground.”

The bill is sponsored by Councilman Brian O’Neill, and is expected to be passed by the full Council next week.

O’Connor, of Millbrook, was a police SWAT team member shot to death on March 13 as he served a fugitive murder arrest warrant in Frankford.

Among those testifying in favor of the bill at a public hearing were a representative of the Department of Parks and Recreation and Terri O’Connor, Jimmy’s widow.

O’Neill said a dedication ceremony will take place in the future. ••

Eagles film to screen

Maybe Next Year, the documentary film that captured the Eagles’ Super-Bowl winning season from the perspective of four of the team’s most die-hard fans, will play at the drive-in at the Navy Yard on Oct. 20-21, at 7 p.m.

The documentary, which first premiered at the Philadelphia Film Festival in October 2019, was directed by Drexel University graduate Kyle Thrash.

Maybe Next Year follows Shirley Dash, Barry Vagnoni, Bryant Moreland and Jesse Callsen as they navigate the challenges of life with their love of the Eagles and the sport of football.

Nominate a hero

Mazda North American Operations has launched its “Mazda Heroes: Honoring The Human Spirit” program.

The initiative aims to place a spotlight on individuals across the country who have selflessly dedicated themselves to their communities throughout 2020. Through Mazda Heroes, MNAO will select 50 deserving people and provide each hero with a Mazda MX-5 Miata 100th Anniversary Special Edition.

Celebrate Halloween

City Councilman Bobby Henon will hold Bobby’s Halloween Boo Bash on Saturday, Oct. 31, from noon to 2 p.m. at Cannstatter’s, 9130 Academy Road.

The outdoor event includes trick or treating through trunks and tables, games and activities, DJ, door prizes, scavenger activity, candy and other goodies, informative resources for parents and concession stand food available for purchase.

All attendees over age 2 will be required to wear a face mask at all times. They will be required to complete a healthcare questionnaire and have their temperature checked before entering.

Election office opens at GWHS

The city elections commissioners last week opened seven satellite election offices to provide Philadelphia voters with easier access to register to vote and to vote by mail.

One office is at George Washington High School, 10175 Bustleton Ave.

Ten more satellite offices will open in the near future.

The offices are open seven days a week and will remain open through Election Day, Nov. 3. Hours are 11:30 a.m. to 6:30 p.m., Monday through Thursday, and 9:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., on Friday, Saturday and Sunday.

In addition to being able to register, voters may request a mail-in ballot and return it to cast their vote. North Philadelphia resident Priscilla Bennett cast the first mail-in vote in Philadelphia for the general election.

Commissioner Chairwoman Lisa Deeley said, “This fall, Philadelphians are excited – excited to cast their vote. We at the Commissioners’ Office are pleased to be able to offer Philadelphia voters several different, safe options on how they can exercise their right to be heard. You can vote at the polls on Election Day, Nov. 3, you can vote through the mail, and starting today, you can vote in-person at one of our offices around the city, whichever is best for your personal voting plan.”

Commissioner Omar Sabir said, “It is crucial that black and brown voters understand that they have purpose, and their opinion is significant for government to work at an optimal level. I’m pleased that the satellite offices will make voting more accessible to all Philadelphians.”

CTK holding golf outing

Christ the King School will hold a golf outing and luncheon on Monday, Oct. 12, at Bensalem Township Country Club, located at 2000 Brown Ave., Bensalem.

AHCU collecting for the needy

American Heritage Credit Union invites the community to help reach its goal of collecting 20,020 pounds of food in this year’s Spirit of Giving Food Drive. All nonperishable food donations will be given out to various food pantries and food banks throughout the community to help families in need this holiday season.

The donations will be collected through Nov. 20 at all American Heritage branch locations. Nonperishable goods such as soups, canned meat and vegetables, rice and pasta are at a higher demand this time of year due to holidays like Thanksgiving.

Each American Heritage branch will collect goods for a food bank or organization that directly supports families in the area the branch is located. ••

Violinist to perform at virtual meeting

The Sisterhood of Congregations of Shaare Shamayim will be holding its first virtual opening meeting on Wednesday, Oct. 21, at 1 p.m.

The program will feature violinist Claudia Pellegrini.

The cost for the program is $18 per person.

Nazareth holding bariatric sessions

Nazareth Hospital hosts free, online bariatric information sessions for the community to educate patients about weight-loss surgery options and support services at Nazareth Bariatrics.

Participants will have the opportunity to speak with Nazareth Hospital’s bariatric surgeons. The information sessions will take place at 5 p.m. on the following Wednesdays: Oct. 21, Nov. 18 and Dec. 16.

Golf outing in memory of ‘Mac’

Democratic Ward 66B will hold a golf fundraiser in remembrance of Mike McAleer on Saturday, Oct. 10, at John F. Byrne Golf Club, 9550 Leon St.

McAleer led the ward from 1969 until his death last December.

The cost is $100. Registration is at 1 p.m., with golfing beginning at 2. Lunch is included. Dinner and draft beer will be available at 6 p.m. at the Taggart House, 9961 Frankford Ave.

The cost for dinner and draft beer at the Taggart House for non-golfers is $50.

Election deadline dates

The last day to register to vote in the upcoming election is Oct. 19.

Meanwhile, the last day to apply for an absentee or mail-in ballot is Oct. 27.

In a recent ruling, the Democratic-controlled state Supreme Court said absentee and mailed-in ballots that are postmarked by 8 p.m. on Election Day, Nov. 3, will be counted as long as they arrive by 5 p.m. three days later.

Virtual meeting on election

Concert will benefit treatment facilities

David Uosikkinen’s In the Pocket will headline a drive-in concert on Nov. 7, from 7 to 10 p.m., at the Neshaminy Mall.

The lot opens at 5:30 p.m.

There will be performances from members of the Hooters, Tommy Conwell, the A’s, the Soul Survivors, Smash Palace, Beru Revue and the American Dream.

People are welcome to tailgate. Food and refreshments will be available.

Proceeds benefit the Leigh Leckerman Foundation, which supports treatment facilities that help people recover from drug and alcohol addiction.

Children’s Scholarship Fund Philadelphia announced the opening of its 2021-2022 application season.

 Applications for need-based, four-year K-8 scholarships for Philadelphia families will be open through March 1, with a priority deadline of Nov. 15, and are available at www.csfphiladelphia.org.

All new CSFP scholarships will be awarded through a random lottery and can be provided to a family as a whole for up to three children.

Applications received by Nov. 15 will be entered into a December lottery. All other applications will be selected in a March lottery. ••

S. Phila. High Class of ‘68 meeting Oct. 2021

Members of the South Philadelphia High School Class of 1968 will meet on Saturday, Oct. 16, 2021, from noon to 4 p.m. at the Waterfall Room, 2015 S. Water St.

Tickets cost $55 and include an open bar and buffet luncheon.

Columbus Day closing

The state Department of Transportation announced that all driver license and photo centers will be closed Saturday, Oct. 10, through Monday, Oct. 12, in observance of Columbus Day.
