A man died of a self-inflicted gunshot wound to the head after exchanging fire with police Saturday evening in Summerdale, authorities said.

Two officers were on their way to a domestic incident around 6:30 p.m. when they were flagged down at Sanger Street and Miriam Road for a man in a camouflage jacket with a gun, police said.

After they approached the man, he ran down the 5600 block of Miriam Road, and the officers gave chase, authorities said. Police said the man reached into his waistband and fired several shots at the officers.

Both officers returned fire, and the man fled to the intersection of Roosevelt Boulevard and Bridge Street, where he shot himself in the head, according to police. Authorities did not identify the man.

The officers were not injured, police said.

A police spokeswoman said the information is preliminary and subject to change pending further investigation. ••
