Morrell woman charged in fatal DUI crash

A Morrell Park woman is facing new drunk-driving-related homicide charges nine months after she allegedly ran down a man who was waiting at a bus stop near her home.

Police arrested Erica Zanczuk, 30, of the 10200 block of Woburn Place last Wednesday in connection with the killing of Elizabeth, N.J., resident Justin Reidy. Zanczuk was traveling southbound on the 9900 block of Academy Road at a high rate of speed shortly after 3 a.m. on Aug. 1 when she lost control of her 1997 Nissan Pathfinder, mounted the curb and struck Reidy, who was waiting for a bus, police said. Zanczuk’s vehicle also struck a utility pole, knocking it to the ground. Reidy died at the scene.

Police detained Zanczuk on the suspicion of drunk-driving. They did not disclose why they waiting until last week to file formal charges, including homicide by vehicle while driving under the influence, homicide by vehicle, involuntary manslaughter and related offenses.

Zanczuk was freed Thursday after posting 10 percent of $50,000 bail. Her preliminary hearing is scheduled for May 27. ••
